Highlights:

1. It's official: Seattle are the first ever expansion side to win the SS-SS!!

2. The real SS winners, CLB, fell to 3rd eventually, after the loss in the final game (thereby splitting, instead of winning their season series vs NER).

3. COL were the biggest loser this week, falling to 9th from 5th.

4. SJE were sucked back into the bottom, replacing the real WS winners NYRB, after their season series against L.A. was reversed in the final week.

5. Despite the 0-5 loss to NYRB, TOR still already clinched this series on the strength of the 2 wins earlier in the season.

- CHI/KCW are the only pair with unconfirmed positions, though CHI need just 1 more point to seal 5th-place, their highest since inception! (pretty remarkable considering they played 2 less seasons than most others)

- TFC are now just 1 point away from their 100th league point. Keep it up!!

- With the win over KCW, CHV have secured 12-place, as well as their 200th league point!!

- It's official, LAG have clinched top-spot at the end of 2009 despite a loss over the weekend, congratulations!!

- With a surprise 1-2 loss to SJE, DCU's 200th league win all-time will have to wait until next season.

- On the other hand, with a 1-1 tie vs CHV, NYRB managed to postpone their 200th league loss until next season, too,

- HOU/CHV are still in-seperable in 12/13-places.

- TFC still need 5 more points from their last 3 games to reach the century mark, keep it up!

MLS Supporters' Shield by Season Series Won

MLS Supporters' Shield by Season Series Won

This idea came into my mind as the merit of the Suupporters' Shield has been under intense debate since its creation, mainly due to the fact that MLS have been playing un-balanced schedule since inception.

(Though a balanced schedule will be played in 2010, un-balanced schedule will most likely return thereafter, as the league expands)

Thus, I've worked out the alternate MLS Standings base on the number of Season Series won, where we can really see which teams really out-perform the others in a fairer manner, without the potentially bias effects of un-balanced schedules.

Just some ground rules:
1) As with the usual points system, 3 were awarded for a season series won, 1 each for a split series, 0 for a loss.
2) A season series would be won by a team who:
- earned more points than their opponents from the games in the season series (similar to the "1st-to-5" concept)
- scored more goals in case of equal points earned,
- otherwise the series would be considered split. (away goals rule don't apply, :-)
- for '96-99, FT wins would worth more than SO wins.
3) In case of 2/more teams tied on season series points, usual MLS tie-breakers such as head-to-head, GD, GS would apply.

Without further ado, let's see who would have won the Shield / Runners-up, base on Season Series won.

'96: LAG, TPB (LAG won series vs TPB for SS)
'97: KCW, FCD (FCD won series vs DCU for #2)

1. LAG would have been the most successful team so far with 3 Shields, followed by DCU/HOU with 2 each.
2. SEA, the current leaders of 2009, could very well be the first ever expansion side to win it...
3. Long-suffering NYRB fans would have been able to celebrate their 1st "major" title with the 2003 Shield!!

Highlights:

Though just 3 games took place, this week was no less eventful:

- It's confirmed: NYRB will end the season in 9th-place as they can't catch COL now.

- In the direct battle of 6/7th-places, NER lost out on a great chance to overtake KCW.

- While FCD moved back to 4th with a 2-2 draw vs DCU, the 2 points dropped meant CLB will secure 3rd-place with just another point!

- The draw didn't do DCU any favors either, LAG will confirm top spot should they score another 7 points for the rest of the season.

Highlights:

It has been quite an eventful week, with many movements in the PTS & PPG table, as well as many teams reaching milestones of their own.

1. DCU have pulled leveled with LAG again, & became the 1st team to score 700 league goals, congrats!!

2. DCU will be able to grab sole possession of top-spot with at least a tie with Seattle in the coming mid-week game.

3. DCU are also just 7 victories away from being the 1st team to get 200 league wins all-time!

4. CLB continued to pull away from the chasing pack.

5. KCW moved back into 4th (by PTS) above FCD, though FCD still remain ahead on PPG.

6. CHF slumped to their 3rd straight loss & lost more grounds on CLB/KCW/FCD.

7. NYRB's free fall continued, the fact that they became the 6th team to score 600 goals this week is scant consolation for a disastrous season so far.

8. In the space of a week, Houston have clawed back 6 points on Chivas, closing the gap between them to just 8 points down from 14 a week ago. With 2 games in hand, Houston have good chance of moving into all-time 12th soon,

9. TFC just registered their 20th win all-time in their 3rd-season in the league...

10. Seattle jumped back to 3rd by PPG above LAG/DCU, they can go 2nd with a win over DCU in the next game.

11. Last but not least, a couple of teams are getting pretty close with other in terms of PPG (within 0.01 of each other), such that more musical chairs can be expected next week, e.g.:
- CHF / SSFC (1.547 / 1.538)

The Standings are officially divided into Eastern / Western Conferences as well, which definitely makes more sense isn't it? I wonder if there will be any East-West playoff at the end of the season?

NZFC 2004/05 - Canterbury played extra home game

At the end of 2007/08 (4th season), where every team should have played equal number (42) of Home/Away games, Canterbury will again play 1 more home game than others, while Waikato play 1 less.

It was the same case at the end of 2005/06 (2nd season), where all else played 21 Home/Away, Canterbury played 22 while Waikato played just 20 at Home.

Even if their game with Auckland is switched, Waikato would have still played 1 less Home Game , while Auckland played 1 more instead.

So I guess there're more errors in the 2004/05 fixtures, or even 2005/06?

Dynamo defends MLS soccer crown with rally for 2-1 triumph

The Houston Dynamo won a second consecutive Major League Soccer title Sunday because Zimbabwean Joseph Ngwenya stole New England's heart and Canadian midfielder Dwayne De Rosario swiped the trophy.

Ngwenya struck from the seat of his pants for the equalizer in the 61st minute and De Rosario nodded in a rare header in the 74th to give Dynamo a 2-1 victory over the Revolution in the MLS Cup final.

"We proved how strong a will our team has," De Rosario said. "Our dedication and determination, the will to never give up, is always there. To win back-to-back is special. This moment will live in our hearts forever."

On the same pitch where England star David Beckham made his MLS debut in August, Dynamo won the club's fourth title in seven years and matched DC United as the only back-to-back champions in the 12-season history of the US league.

"This is a team that should be talked about for years to come," Dynamo coach Dominic Kinnear said. "It was definitely tough to repeat. For us to be standing here after the start we got shows how steely and determined these players are."

New England fell to 0-4 in MLS finals, having lost to Houston last year on penalty kicks and in overtime to Los Angeles in both 2002 and 2005. Revolution coach Steve Nicol said their history of title losses had no role in the loss.

"This had nothing to do with any other game. You leave a team hanging around and it comes back to bite you. That's what happened," the former Scottish standout said. "We're guilty of not taking our chances. That's why we lost.

"Their first goal probably shouldn't have gotten that far. That goal was a scrappy goal. We never got back. We got undone. It changed the game."

Taylor Twellman's header in the 20th minute gave New England a 1-0 lead but Houston switched from a 4-4-2 to a 3-5-2 alignment and leveled when Ngwenya, playing for injured Dynamo forward Brian Ching, slid home a goal from the turf.

Ngwenya lost control of a centering pass five meters from the goal and fell to the grass, then swung out his right leg and flicked the ball beneath diving Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis and across the line to level the match.

"We had a lot of scrappy goals all year and to let one in was really disheartening," said Revolution defender Jay Heaps, who played in all four of New England's finals losses.

"They have all been tough. This was tough because it was our opportunity. I wish I could put into words how tough it feels."

De Rosario, voted the MLS Cup Most Valuable Player, leaped high for a pass from Davis at the top of the penalty area 13 minutes later and the 29-year-old midfielder smacked a header past Reis for the winner.

"I've seen some great goals in some big games but that one was big," Heaps said.
De Rosario almost never works on headers in practice but his noggin nodded nicely when needed most.

"I don't score with my head. It was more instinct than anything else," De Rosario said. "I usually try to bicycle or volley it but heading it was the first thought that came into my head.

"Brad played a perfect ball to my head and I had the easy job putting it in. The rest was history."

Kinnear had pondered playing conservatively after the equalizer but his team was determined to stay aggressive.

"The guys' mentality to keep on attacking even after the equalizer, give them full credit for that," Kinnear said.

The Dynamo have a chance for an unprecedented third crown in a row in 2008.

"It's a challenge we will be excited to face," Dynamo goalkeeper Pat Onstad said. "To come back in the second half, it shows how much it means to these guys and how determined they are to win." — AFP

With this win, LAG at least avoided the tag of "Worst Team in MLS History" & improved its projected finish to 2nd-from-bottom as compared to the last post, though they are still rooted at last place for now & quite far-far-away from the 8th & final playoff spot.

6 more games to go for LAG in September, next-up is Chivas USA on Sep-13. Although LAG has won most of their games against Chivas since 2005, they were well-beaten 0-3 when they last met on Aug-23. This is going to be another crucial clash for them...

LAG 1-2 RSL: Disastrous Season Continues

Finishing bottom in MLS 2007 now seem to be the forgone conclusion for LA Galaxy after it suffered another crucial defeat to Real Salt Lake (who's 2nd bottom) on Sep-1, having taken a 1-goal lead but ended-up losing 1-2.

Why is it a forgone conclusion? Simple:
LAG has now lost 6 league games in a row, with 7 more games to go in Sep (practically a game every 3/4 days), things don't really look up; while RSL has won 3 out of the last 5 & is really hitting form towards the end of the season. The Sep-1 victory is also RSL's very first away win this season (how ironic that it came against LAG).

In order to avoid finishing last overall in 2007, let alone reaching the now-seem-beyond-reach playoffs, LAG simply has to beat RSL on the Sep-1 MLS game to stand any chance...

September will be a very tough month for LAG, who not only has to play 8 games(!) during this period, but also need to cope with the absence of David Beckham for about 6 weeks...

LA lost SuperLiga final on 29-Aug, yet another blow...

On the day RSL sent them to bottom-place in the MLS, LA Galaxy suffered another blow by losing the inaugural North American SuperLiga final to Mexico's Panchua 3-4 in PKs, when the match ended 1-1 a.e.t.

Beckham himself started the game but had to leave after 30 mins with a knee injury after his collision with one of the Panchua players.

Now he faces a longer road to full recovery as the team struggles to get anything out of this disastorous season...

David Beckham's Team, the Los Angeles Galaxy, has officially bacame the bottom team of Major League Soccer for the first time in 2007 season, after the previous bottom team, Real Salt Lake, beat Kansas City Wizards 3-1 on 30-Aug-2007.

Though this is not unexpected, as LA has occupied the second bottom place for long time with RSL chasing closely from behind, it's still sad to see Beckham landed himself in a messy team...

CARSON, Calif. -- David Beckham made a fairy-tale competitive home debut for the Los Angeles Galaxy on Wednesday night at The Home Depot Center, scoring his first goal in an LA uniform and setting up another as he led the Galaxy to a 2-0 victory against D.C. United and a place in the inaugural SuperLiga final.
Beckham scored the Galaxy's first goal with a stunning free kick midway through the first half, then set Landon Donovan free behind the United defense for a breakaway goal early in the second, before leaving the field just after the hour mark.

Inspired by the Climbing the Ladder Blog titled "New Milestones Upcoming for MLS", as well as my own post at S.League Trivia titled "KSR vs Sengkang on 6 Aug 2007 is the 1700th S.League Match!", just realized that David Beckham may be lucky enough to play in the upcoming 2000th game in MLS after his debut for LA Galaxy on 9-Aug.

The only thing that may prevent him from doing so is his nagging ankle injury. What do you think are his chances of playing this week?

Beckham's LA Galaxy Jersey in SG

Went to a jersey store at Queensway Shopping Centre (S'pore) today & found that the LA Galaxy Jersey with Beckham's name on the back is now on sale for SGD$129. (Same price for Home/Away)

This seemed to be around the same price as compared to ordering from the Official Site in USA, although USA-SG shipping fee also need to be take into account.

Asked the store staff if nameless edition are available, the answer is NO, reason being NOBODY would buy them if NOT for Beckham, which is quite true, :-)

Anyway, I resisted the temptation to buy it for now, will wait until the prices come down. (this has always been my jersey-purchase policy: buying past seasons ones at about 1/3 the price, :-)

Beckham finally played in Major League Soccer!

David Beckham finally made his competitive debut in MLS (Major League Soccer in USA) on 9th-Aug-2007 as a 72nd min. subs. for LA Galaxy against DC United. However, he couldn't stop his team from losing 0-1 on the eve, here are the match reports on MLSNet, SoccerNet & TodayOnline.

His previous apperance against Chelsea on July-21st as a 78th min. subs. was actually for an exhibition match, which ended in a 0-1 loss as well.

With this latest setback, LA Galaxy is now in serious troubles of missing the post-season (there's no relegation in MLS though, it works more like NBA than EPL), being 8 points away of a playoff spot with half a season left to play, based on standings on MLSNet.Com & Wikipedia.Org.

Hopefully Beckham can recover soon & lift the team for the rest of the season... Good Luck!!
